What is a good Claude Max alternative for Claude Code?

Last updated by the APIClaw team

APIClaw is a Claude Max alternative for Claude Code users who keep hitting session windows and weekly limits. You pay $19 to $129 a month for a daily request quota that resets at 00:00 UTC, with no 5-hour window, no weekly cap and no per-token bill. Claude Code connects by changing one base URL.

Why people look for a Claude Max alternative

Claude Max is Anthropic's subscription for heavy users of Claude and Claude Code. The Max 5x plan costs $100 a month and Max 20x costs $200 a month, with Claude Pro at $20 a month below them, according to the Claude pricing page. All of these plans share two kinds of limit. Usage is metered in 5-hour session windows, and there is a separate weekly limit on top. When either one runs out, you wait.

For a person who chats with Claude a few times a day, that works fine. For someone running Claude Code all day, the limits are the product. Agent sessions resend the whole conversation on every turn, so a long refactor can use a large share of a window in under an hour. Hitting the weekly limit on a Wednesday is the common complaint, and it is the reason this page exists.

APIClaw takes a different approach. It is a flat-rate gateway: you pick a plan with a daily request quota, pay the same price every 30 days, and the quota resets at 00:00 UTC. There is no 5-hour window and no weekly cap. See the Claude Code without rate limits guide for how the daily quota behaves in practice.

The most important row is the last-but-one. APIClaw is an API gateway. It does not give you the Claude desktop or mobile app, projects, or the web chat. It gives you an API key that works in Claude Code, Cursor, Cline and other coding tools.

How much capacity do you get?

Neither Anthropic nor OpenAI publishes request counts for its subscriptions, so any comparison is an estimate from the published tier levels. On that basis, the $129 Ultimate Max plan carries more than 11x the monthly usage of the $200 Claude Max 20x and ChatGPT Pro plans. The $19 Plus plan covers more monthly working capacity than the $100 tiers.

Treat those as estimates, not guarantees. What APIClaw does publish is exact: every plan has a fixed number of requests per day.

PlanPrice a monthRequests a dayClaude Sonnet calls a day (weight 2)
Plus$19500250
Pro$391,000500
Max$591,500750
Ultimate$693,0001,500
Ultimate Plus$894,0002,000
Ultimate Pro$996,0003,000
Ultimate Max$1298,0004,000

Above 8,000 requests a day, a custom plan is available through Telegram support.

What a request weight means

Each call counts as a number of requests depending on the model. Claude Sonnet 5.5 counts as 2. Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Sol count as 3. DeepSeek V4 Pro and DeepSeek V4 Flash count as 1. The model hub lists every model and its weight.

The size of the request does not matter. A 500-token question and a 200,000-token agent turn cost the same weight. Models have up to 1M-token context, and APIClaw adds no cap on tokens per request beyond the model's own limit.

Set up Claude Code in two minutes

Create an account, copy your key, and edit the Claude Code settings file. On macOS and Linux it is ~/.claude/settings.json. On Windows it is %USERPROFILE%\.claude\settings.json.

Use https://apiclaw.biz with no /v1 on the end, because Claude Code speaks the Anthropic Messages format. Restart Claude Code and run a prompt. The full walkthrough, including environment variables and troubleshooting, is in the Claude Code setup guide.

You can test everything first. The free trial gives 50 requests with no card, and you can sign up here.

A realistic day on each setup

Picture a developer who opens Claude Code at nine and works on a feature until six. On a subscription, the first long session can use a large part of the 5-hour window, and when the window closes the choices are to wait, drop to a smaller model or stop. If the same pattern repeats four days in a row, the weekly limit becomes the real boundary of the week.

On APIClaw the same developer has a number rather than a window. On the $39 Pro plan that number is 1,000 requests a day, or 500 Claude Sonnet 5.5 calls. The count does not slow down in the afternoon, and tomorrow starts fresh at 00:00 UTC. The trade is that a very heavy day can still reach the daily quota, and the answer then is a bigger tier or a lighter model for routine work.

Switching without losing your setup

Switching does not mean abandoning Claude Max. The settings file approach lets you keep both. Leave your Max login as it is, and add the env block only when you want Claude Code to use APIClaw. Remove the block and Claude Code goes back to your subscription. Your project files, CLAUDE.md instructions and skills are unaffected, because they live in your repository and your home folder, not in the gateway.

Other tools work the same way. Cursor, Cline, Continue and OpenCode can use one APIClaw key through the OpenAI-style base URL https://apiclaw.biz/v1, so a single plan covers every editor on your machine. The one key for every model guide lists the model IDs you can choose from.

Who should stay on Claude Max

Claude Max is the better choice in some cases, and it is worth being direct about them.

Stay on Max if you mostly use the Claude app or claude.ai for chat, writing, analysis and projects, and your usage fits inside the session windows and weekly limit. You get a polished app, file handling and features that an API gateway does not provide. If you rarely hit a limit, a different plan structure will not improve your day.

Stay on Max, too, if you want a direct relationship with the model vendor. APIClaw is an independent gateway and is not affiliated with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or Cursor. It routes requests to models available through publicly available sources and provider APIs.

Who should switch

Switch if Claude Code or another coding agent is your main use and you run into windows or the weekly limit. Switch if you want to use several model families from one key, for example Claude for hard problems and DeepSeek for cheap bulk edits. Switch if you prefer to pay with crypto, since APIClaw takes payment through NOWPayments and needs no card. The crypto payment guide explains the checkout.

A sensible path is to keep your Max subscription for the app, start the free trial, point Claude Code at APIClaw for a day of real work, and compare how far the quota goes. If you also work in Cursor, the Cursor setup guide covers that client too. For a wider view of how gateways differ, see the comparison pages.

Honest caveats

APIClaw still has a daily request quota. It removes the 5-hour window and the weekly cap, but when you spend a day's quota, you wait for 00:00 UTC. Pick a plan with headroom for your heaviest day, and use lighter models for routine edits to stretch it further.

At very low volume, a few dozen modest calls a day, per-token billing is often cheaper than $19 a month. A flat plan pays off when your usage is heavy and regular.

Frequently asked questions

Is APIClaw a real replacement for Claude Max?

For Claude Code and other API-based coding tools, yes. It does not include the Claude app, web chat or projects, so people who mainly use those should stay on Claude Max.

Does APIClaw have a weekly limit like Claude Max?

No. APIClaw has no 5-hour window and no weekly cap. It has a daily request quota that resets at 00:00 UTC, and the quota depends on your plan.

How much does APIClaw cost compared with Claude Max?

Plans run from $19 to $129 a month, against $100 and $200 for Claude Max 5x and 20x. The $129 Ultimate Max plan carries an estimated 11x the monthly usage of the $200 tier, though neither vendor publishes request counts.

How do I connect Claude Code to APIClaw?

Set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to https://apiclaw.biz (no /v1) and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN to your APIClaw key in ~/.claude/settings.json. Then set ANTHROPIC_MODEL to claude-sonnet-5-5 and restart Claude Code.
